5thEstate.com EXCLUSIVE story! (MUST credit) The only place to see the proof!
I am a product of city schools and a 1982 McCaskey graduate ~ Ron Harper Jr, Editor
5thEstate.com has discovered new evidence that is good news - and bad news for embattled school district of Lancaster's superintendent. First the good news. David K. DeShields, Curry's brother-in-law, did earn his high school GED. The bad news? DeShields earned his GED while spending time in the Delaware State Penitentiary! That's right, Curry, who defended the hiring of his brother-in-law for $1,500 per DAY - hired this ex-con for a consultant. Here is a portion of a letter DeShields wrote while in jail to the judge asking for time off because he got his GED. (Click to see his entire letter)
Why Was DeShields in Jail?
Here is how one court document described why he was in jail the FIRST time:
"David K. DeShields was involved in a Northern Delaware crime spree with several other persons. The crimes involved residential burglaries, thefts and the theft of automobiles which were sold to Philadelphia, PA 'chop shops.' "
He was GRAND!
Before a deal was cut, DeShields faced 45 counts including 26 felony GRAND THIEF AUTO. Apparently it's a bad idea to sell eight stolen cars to an undercover FBI agent. The arresting officer questioned DeShields about stealing a particular car and DeShields confessed that he stole so many cars he didn't know how many!
DeShields was a guest in a Delaware State Pen from the date of his arrest in early 1984 until February 17, 1988.
Again from the court document:
"At that time, DeShields told me that he lived with his mother at 1205 Linden Avenue, Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania."
This is Ric Curry Burn's mother-in-laws address!
DeShields Sells Lines
But then it happened again. Dover Delware police stopped DeShields while on probation for Grand Thief Auto. Again from the same document:
"On August 4, 1990 David DeShields was arrested by the Police Department of Dover, Delaware. He was charged with Criminal Impersonation, Resisting Arrest, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Conspiracy Second Degree, Maintaining a Dwelling for Use or Distribution of Drugs, Delivery of Drugs, and Trafficking in Cocaine."
(…)
"According to the arrest report, at the time of his initial apprehension, by PFC Whitmore of DPD, DeShields was clutching (5) five twenty dollar bags of cocaine in his right hand."
DeShields went to jail from May 25 1991- Feb 10 1996. Deshields also spent time as a guest in Delaware State Pen from October 18-20 1998 for contempt of court in not paying over $10,000 in restitution.
(In fact DeShields STILL owes this money! In April 2001, DeShields setup a payment plan of $50 a month and hasn't paid a cent!)
With that as a back drop, the following is what Ric Curry Burns said about how long he has known the same David K. DeShields. Keep in mind that Curry was hired in August of 2000.
(transcribed from video tape) "I met Mr. DeShields, while employed there, he was a community worker, he was some person who had activities in the community, worked in the school, volunteered in the school to help with climate and discipline. About three or four years later, for the record, Mr. DeShields introduced me to my present wife whom I've just married." (considering DeShields just got out of jail for among other things, selling cocaine, one wonders what "activities in the community" and what kind of volunteering "in the school" DeShields was doing -Editor's note.)
That means that Curry knew DeShields and allowed this ex-con, who just got out of jail, to enter and work in Philly schools that were under his control! It also means that Curry knew DeShields when he went back to jail for not paying restitution to his dozens of victims!
What did Curry say when asked if DeShields had any criminal activity in his background?
"I am not aware of any other incidence in his background. More importantly, my work with Mr. DeShields was around him helping me and other leaders reach young people in urban centers.
(...)
I believe that there are people, who are grass roots, community activists can lend a voice, can lend support, can provide valuable information as to how to relate to, talk with and relate to and deal with young people."
What did DeShields do?
According to Curry, "I do not have, personally, specific documents to show what Mr. DeShields did.
Looks like its time for Ric Curry Burns to get his resume together!
